Beginning PHP5, Apache, MySQL Web Development
The only PHP book I own is "Beginning PHP5, Apache, MySQL Web Development" by Elizabeth Naramore, Jason Gerner, Yann Le Scouarnec, Jeremy Stolz & Michael K. Glass. Over all it's a great book, but I would only recommend it to people looking to really jump head first into PHP, and rather massive PHP projects. Some of the instructions were a little less than intuitive, and at least a few times the code given in the book had errors (and anyone who's coded in PHP knows, errors are BAD). I also think there could have been better explanations for some of the sections. But again, over all I did enjoy the book. The highlights for me were the instructions on setting up your own local web server, and the extensive functions listing in the back. It should also be noted that there is a new version of this book coming out soon. It covers PHP 6 and MySQL 6, so you may want to hold off until this new one hits the shelves! I am currently looking for a better PHP book, something like the Javascript & Ajax book I have. So, for this section, I will not be going off of any books. Instead, I'll be coming up with my own PHP assignments, as well as recreating some of my old scripts. I'm not totally sure yet what that will include, but I do know that I plan to recreate some gambling styled games I wrote a few years ago including a dice game and Keno. These will be complete with a money system for registered users. So be on the lookout for a Casino section sometime in the near future! |
